Why does Seafarers' House distribute phone cards? Phone cards have revolutionized how merchant seafarers stay in touch with home during long contracts at sea. Long before 1993, when phone cards started appearing on the docks of North American ports, port chaplains were centrally involved in helping mariners meet their telecommunication needs. The seafarers' mission was often the only place where a crew member could call his/her loved ones without being interrupted every few minutes by a pay phone operator who wanted another dozen quarters dropped into the machine.
Seafarers' House anticipated that international mariners would be vulnerable to exploitation when they purchased a prepaid product like phone cards. Countless stories exist of crew who paid for cards that did not work. The seller is usually gone by the time that the buyer goes ashore to place a call. A few hours later, the ship sails away. When a new vessel arrives, the process is repeated.
To keep port chaplains relevant to the process of meeting mariners' telecommunication needs by supplying them with highly reliable phone cards Seafarers' House ventured into the business of distributing high-quality phone card products. Our reputation as a source of good cards has spread among ports throughout North America and beyond. Today, we are proud to include many commercial agents among the corps of port chaplains who offer our fine products.
